Bubble writing (also called bubble lettering) is drawing letters so they look round and puffy, like balloons. Follow these steps, or use the generator below to get a perfect guide you can trace.
How to do bubble writing, step by step
- Write your word lightly in pencil. Use simple capital letters and leave a finger-width gap between them, because bubble letters grow.
- Draw a rounded outline around each letter. Keep the same distance all the way round and turn every corner into a curve.
- Shrink the holes. Keep the insides of A, B, D, O, P and R small and round. Small holes make bubble lettering look puffier.
- Let the letters touch. Overlap neighbours slightly and erase the lines where they cross, so the word looks like one squished bubble.
- Erase the pencil and ink the outline with a black marker in one smooth stroke where you can.
- Add a shadow and a shine. Thicken the bottom-right edge for a 3D shadow, and leave a small white highlight on each letter.
Tip: print a word from the generator and trace it a few times. After 3 or 4 tries your hand learns the shapes and you can do bubble lettering freehand.

Bubble lettering mistakes to avoid
- Letters too far apart, which makes the word look like separate balloons.
- Big holes in A, O and P, which make letters look thin instead of puffy.
- Sharp corners. Every corner of bubble lettering should be round.
- Uneven outline width. Keep the gap between pencil and outline the same everywhere.
